The Terlingua Chili Cook-Off

The Terlingua Chili Cook-Off is an annual event that C.A.S.I., the Chili Appreciation Society International puts on the 1st weekend of November.  Not far from the C.A.S.I. location lays its counterpart Frank X. Tolbert Cook-Off.  The Chili Cook-off's bring from 5,000 to 15,000 people in one week.  The Tolbert Cook-Off does attract a smaller crowd.

When people usually ask what's the Chili Cook-Off like, well you'll probably get one or two answers and possibly a combination of both.  Yes, the Chili Cook-Off is fun!   People earn points throughout the year through various Chili Cook-Off's.  If you earn enough points you are able to enter into the C.A.S.I. competition.  There are different types of events to enter.  However, for those who don't know, this Chili is not allowed to contain beans.  Other events include Barbecue and a Margarita cook-off.

Frequently Asked Questions About The Terlingua Cook-Off

How soon should I make my plans?
As soon as you know.  The hotels fill up fast.  There is camping available throughout the town and at both the C.A.S.I. site and the Frank X. Tolbert site.   Camping at both sites allows room for RV's.

Are there a lot of police during the Cook-Off time?
Unfortunately, Yes!  Because of the mass amount of influx to the area, there are a large amount of law enforcement.  They do not allow any loose interpretation of the law.  They are strict on speed laws, seat belts, and registrations.  When it comes to drinking and driving there is absolutely NO TOLERANCE.  Be aware the speed signs are not posted well and it is a 50mph speed limit on FM 170 and in the National Park it is 45mph.  Buckle up and have fun.

Is drinking aloud?
Yes!  In fact, there is usually a lot of it.  Supplies can be purchased at local stores including the Study Butte Store, Gloria's & Gloria's Last Chance Liquor Store, and the Lajitas Trading Post.  Beer is sold also at the Terlingua Trading Company.

What is the cost?
To be sure, I would contact both C.A.S.I. and the Frank X. Tolbert sites to find out the exact cost.  A weekend pass in 1999 at the C.A.S.I. location cost $20 a person.   The Tolbert site was $15 a person.
